Rise of College Tuition

Once upon a time college was a place many high school students dreamed of going. However, in increase in the college tuition, college is becoming less affordable for everyone. People would have to think if college is a place they should go or not. Even if they go to college, they would have to use a loan and pay off their debt after graduation. College is a place you can receive a better education than high school, and after college, there will be a high chance to get a job than graduating from high school. College opens up the options you can have after graduation, and with the education you receive, you will have the knowledge to use in your life to make your life better. In this situation when the college tuition has been rising, college tuition needs to be lowered, because there are loans for students, but those are not making the student’s financial situation any better, and is discouraging high school students from attending to college.
In this world, college education is becoming more important than it was before, and in this situation, college tuition has been rising. According to Adam Davidson in his article “Is College Tuition Really Too High?” from New York Times, “Tuition at a private university is now roughly three times as expensive as it was in 1974, costing an average of $31,000 a year; public tuition, at $9,000, has risen by nearly four times.” These numbers show how college tuition has been rising in the past few decades. With this increase, people would need to consider about going to college or not, and the tuition fee should not be the key factor of if you should go to college or not. This increase in tuition is discouraging high school students from attending to college and increasing the stress for the students who will need to pay off the debt after graduation.
In addition, there are scholarships and many aids available for students, but as Harvey D. Shapiro stated “there is aid money available, but it is now being offered in ways that may not be as attractive as they have been in the past” in his article “Personal Finance; Paying For A College Education” from the New York Times. Those aids are offered in a form of package which consist loans or on-campus part-time jobs. However, if they get the loan, students will need to pay the money they received as a loan after graduation. Also, people who graduate with student loan bets cannot own a house or anything, they will be limited on how they can live. With this situation, students will not be able to focus on their academic success so they can graduate and get a better job.

Though, the tuition for college has been rising, according to Richard Perez-Pena in his article “University of California Is Set to Raise Tuition,” he states that “the University of California Board of Regents have preliminary approval Wednesday to a plan to raise tuition 27.6 percent over five years.” For every students and their parents this news would make the anger. College tuition is already expensive, and with preliminary approval, college might not be a place where most people go. This college tuition needs to decrease so everyone could have the opportunity to go to college and receive the education people dreamed of receiving. The increase in the college tuition is not helping the college students or even the high school students who are planning to attend to college to receive a higher and better education.
Furthermore, in the article “College Is the Goal. Will These Three Teenagers Get There?” by Anemona Hartocollis from the New York Times, it states that “what stops kids from getting a college degree are rising college costs and the declining value of financial aid.” This could mean that people coming from poor background will not be successful in college and college is not a place for those people who does not have a good financial background. In the same article by Anemona Hartocollis, it also states that “from Topeka High 45 percent of graduates go to four-year college, and 17 percent go to two-year college. More than half the students are poor by federal standard.” These numbers are coming from Topeka High School, but from this it is obvious that some people are not able to attend to college because of their financial background. If the person has the possibility to become successful by getting the education in college, but does not have the money to attend, the college is eliminating one’s opportunity, and this should not happen. People from low-income families should not confront this rise of college tuition problem and should be able to afford college.

In conclusion, college tuition has been rising and many college students have been working while they attend to college to being able to receive the education, and high school students are facing the problem of college tuition, because it is expensive. Due to the rise in the college tuition, now people are thinking if college is worth the price. The price tag on the college is not affordable for most of us, especially for people coming from low-income families. It is hard to say that college is for everyone and everyone have the equal opportunity to attend to college and receive its education. College in America should decrease its tuition fee to make college available for everyone and to provide equal opportunity. College is where many high school students dream to go and receive the education, but with this increase in the college tuition, it is becoming harder to attend or even if people attend to college, they would have to go in debt which will limit their life after graduation. Dream should become a reality and college should be meant for everyone, and to make it be for everyone we should decrease to the point where everyone could afford college and receive the higher and better education they can in their life.
